A local photographer’s complete guide to photoshoots at Passo Gardena, Passo Sella, and Città dei Sassi (Val Gardena).

The Gardena Pass, the Sella Pass and the City of Stones are three spectacular areas located in the final part of the Val Gardena.
From a photographic point of view, they represent a perfect triptych for creating couple photo shoots, elopements and intimate weddings, with the concrete possibility of combining them in the same shoot.

As a local photographer in the Dolomites, I consider this area one of the most powerful ever for its variety of panoramas, proximity to the mountains and visual impact.

Why choose Passo Gardena, Passo Sella, and Città dei Sassi for a photo shoot?

These three locations share key characteristics:

  • very close and imposing mountains
  • open and deep panoramas
  • relatively easy access
  • ability to change scenery in a few minutes

👉 They are perfect for couples who want epic, authentic and uninflated images, without long treks.

The 3 best photo spots at Passo Gardena

The Gardena Pass offers some of the best panoramic views of the Dolomites, especially if you know exactly where to go.

📍 Point 1 – Frara Refuge

  • You can park directly at the Rifugio Frara
  • A few meters from the parking lot, following the front path
  • After just a few steps, a spectacular view opens up onto:
    • Sella Group
    • Sassolungo
    • Sassopiatto
    • views towards the Badia Valley

It is an extremely varied location, with wide perspectives and very close mountains, perfect for a complete shoot.

📍 Point 2 – Panoramic side paths

Along the paths that start from the pass you will find:

  • most intimate points
  • clean lines
  • less crowding

Ideal for:

  • portraits
  • cinematic images
  • couple storytelling

📍 Point 3 – Dantercepies Cable Car (optional)

From Passo Gardena it is possible to go up with the Dantecepies.

⚠️ Recommended for a few shots only:

  • breathtaking views
  • but less variety than the path to the Frara Refuge
  • perfect as a complement, not as a main location

Sella Pass: up-close views and a unique view of Val Gardena

The Sella Pass is one of the strongest locations for those looking for:

  • imposing and close-together mountains
  • a wide view of Val Gardena
  • images with great visual impact

Best spot at Passo Sella

  • Parking at the top of the pass, on the left side
  • A panoramic path starts
  • Following it you reach the best photographic point in the area

From here we get:

  • a unique view of Sassolungo and Sassopiatto
  • incredible depth on the valley
  • perfect scenarios for elopements and couples

City of Stones: A Completely Different Perspective

The City of Stones is located just before arriving at the Sella Pass.

It is a very special location because:

  • offers an extremely close view of Sassolungo and Sassopiatto
  • it completely changes the point of view
  • creates more intimate, graphic and three-dimensional images

It is perfect for:

  • couples
  • environmental portraits
  • shots other than the classic open panorama

Winter Photoshoot at Passo Sella, Dolomites

Winter or summer shoot? What to choose?

❄️ Winter

  • I recommend Gardena Pass and Sella Pass
  • ❌ The City of Stones is not recommended:
    • area very busy with skiers
    • less manageable for shooting

🌿 Summer / mid-season

  • All three locations are perfectly usable
  • Real possibility of combining them in the same service

Photoshoot at Passo Gardena at Sunset

Why combine them in the same shoot?

The reduced distance between:

  • Gardena Pass
  • City of Stones
  • Sella Pass

allows you to:

  • change scenery quickly
  • create a complete photo story
  • offering variety without logistical stress

👉 It is one of the best areas in the Dolomites to maximize photographic results in a short time.

Why rely on a local photographer in Val Gardena

These locations are very popular, but:

  • The best points are not immediate
  • the light changes rapidly
  • crowding must be managed

A local photographer of the Dolomites knows:

  • best times
  • right paths
  • quick alternatives
  • real management of conditions

And this is what transforms a shooting from “touristy” to authorial.
