The Alpe di Siusi is one of the most iconic and spectacular areas of the Dolomites.
An immense, one-of-a-kind plateau that extends between Siusi allo Sciliar, Castelrotto, Fiè allo Sciliar, Ortisei and Selva di Val Gardena.
As a local photographer in the Dolomites, I consider the Alpe di Siusi one of the best locations ever for couple photo shoots, elopements and intimate weddings, but also one of the most complex to manage if you don’t know the accesses, times and strategic points well.
Alpe di Siusi: a huge area, not a single location
One of the most common mistakes is to think of the Alpe di Siusi as a specific point.
In reality, it is a vast area, with:
- different accesses
- different regulations
- photographic points very distant from each other
🚗 Access by car:
- allowed only during limited hours
- transit is blocked when the cable cars are in operation
👉 For this reason, planning is essential.
The best spots for a photo shoot on the Alpe di Siusi
📍 Mont Seuc – the simplest and most scenic point
Mont Seuc is one of the best and most accessible spots:
- It can be reached from Ortisei by cable car
- Once you arrive, you immediately have breathtaking views.
- several panoramic points are a few meters from the finish line
It is ideal for:
- couples
- elopement
- shooting with reduced times
- epic images without demanding trekking
📍 Compatsch – Panorama Hut
On the Compatsch side, the most interesting point is the Panorama Hut.
To reach it:
- cable car to Compatsch
- Panorama chairlift
This area offers:
- wide views of the plateau
- great visual breath
- very clean light, especially in the morning
📍 Spitzbühl – direct but regulated access
Spitzbühl is one of my favorite spots, but it needs to be managed well.
- It can be reached by parking directly at the Spitzbühl chairlift.
- ⚠️ transit with time limits
- open and very varied panoramas
- mountains very close
It is an excellent location for:
- more intimate shots
- storytelling
- less “postcard” images
📍 The Ritsch – the authentic heart of the Alpe di Siusi
One of the most interesting and less obvious points is Ritsch.
- located in the center of the plateau
- reachable:
- by bus from Compatsch
- or with a walk of about 30 minutes
Here you can find:
- endless meadows
- open views of the Sciliar
- an extremely authentic atmosphere
Combine Alpe di Siusi and Seceda in the same service
An excellent photographic strategy is to combine Seceda and Alpe di Siusi from the Ortisei side.
- two completely different environments
- short distance
- enormous narrative variety
- one photo shoot, two opposite worlds
📍 Seceda + Alpe di Siusi = one of the best combos in the Dolomites.
Best times for photography at Alpe di Siusi
🌅 Morning
- clean light
- fewer people
- delicate atmosphere
🌄 Sunset (amazing, but challenging)
- warm, grazing light
- spectacular views
- ⚠️ requires:
- precise organization
- return without ski lifts
- transport planning
👉 With the right experience it is possible to obtain extraordinary images, but it cannot be improvised.
