Lake Resia is one of the most iconic and recognizable places in the Dolomites.
A one-of-a-kind lake, famous throughout the world for its bell tower emerging from the water, capable of creating a suspended, silent and highly evocative atmosphere.
As a local photographer in the Dolomites, I consider Lake Resia an extremely powerful location from a narrative point of view, perfect for couple photo shoots, elopements and unconventional intimate weddings.
Lake Resia is not a natural lake, but an artificial lake.
In 1950, with the construction of a dam for the production of hydroelectric energy, the ancient village of Curon Venosta was completely submerged.
- Houses, roads and fields ended up under water
- The inhabitants were forced to abandon their homes
- The only element still visible is the 14th-century Romanesque bell tower.
Today that bell tower has become a symbol of memory, resilience and identity, making every photo shoot here much more than just a simple aesthetic session.
Location and accessibility: not convenient, but unique
Lake Resia is located in Upper Venosta Valley, near the border with Austria and Switzerland.
It is not a “passage” location like other Dolomite lakes:
- 📍 It is located along the state road
- 🚗 Requires longer travel
- 🕒 It must be planned carefully in terms of times
And this is precisely what makes it less overused and more interesting for those looking for strong, different, and unexpected images.

Like many artificial lakes, Lake Resia frequently varies in water level throughout the year.
- In some periods the bell tower is:
- more “immersed”
- surrounded by water
- In others:
- parts of the base emerge
- more dramatic scenarios are created

The best time for a photo shoot at Lake Resia
❄️ Winter and late winter season (recommended)
In my opinion, the absolute best time to photograph at Lake Resia is:
- winter
- late winter / early spring
Why:
- surreal atmosphere
- frozen or semi-frozen lake
- fewer tourists
- more powerful and iconic images
In some conditions it is even possible to walk on the ice (always with caution and knowledge of the area).
Recommended times: Morning yes, but not too early

Avoid sunrise too early
→ the light is initially obscured by the surrounding mountains - 🌄 Sunset (best choice):
Warm, grazing light
Perfect illumination of the bell tower
Emotional and cinematic atmosphere
Matching the shooting: the lake “before” Lake Resia
Just before Lake Resia, arriving from Val Venosta, you will find Lake San Valentino alla Muta.
- Smallest lake
- Immersed in nature
- Less known
- Perfect to match in the same shooting
